Every time we tried to squeeze in one more box, our trusty treadmill would get squished (no, really, it happened). It was then that my partner and I had an “aha!” moment: it’s time for a move! We’re ditching Minnesota’s snowy winters for Virginia’s charm.
The Realization
As we dove into researching long-distance moving options, I discovered the infamous PODS vs. Moving Company debate. Who knew there were so many ways to transport our stuff? My partner and I had always thought we’d hire a team of expert movers, but then we met some friends who swore by PODs. Their enthusiasm was contagious – until we realized our 4-bedroom house’s worth of stuff wouldn’t fit in one container (oops). That’s when the research really began.
The Hack
Here’s what I learned: if you’re moving a substantial amount of gear (we’re talking treadmills and ellipticals, folks), PODS might not be the most efficient choice. Trust me, I’ve seen those containers packed to the brim – only to realize they won’t accommodate your prized exercise equipment. In our case, we decided to use a combination of PODs for non-essential items (like clothes) and hiring professional movers for the heavy-duty stuff (hello, gym equipment!). UBOX was another option we considered, but it seemed more geared towards smaller moves.
Funny Fail Moment
We did attempt to “save” by packing our entire living room into a 10×10 foot POD. Let’s just say the ” Tetris magic” didn’t quite work out as planned. We ended up with a very frustrated moving company and a garage that still looked like a bomb went off (yes, I’m looking at you, treadmill).
Reflection
Since our move, we’ve been enjoying the freedom of downsizing to a cozy VA apartment – where every morning starts with a peaceful walk on our (still) trusty treadmill. It’s funny how sometimes what seems chaotic in the moment becomes serendipitous in hindsight.
