Systems for Sanity: Unfold the Chaos

Escape the Laundry Cycle: Smart Simplify

Simplifying my life with systems (not as boring as it sounds HA!)

Personal Hook

I’ll never forget the day I realized that being a Super Awesome Homemaker (SAHM) to two tiny tornados didn’t mean I had to sacrifice my sanity. My 2-year-old was “helping” me fold laundry, and I found myself lost in the process of perfect-folding-every-shirt-and-pair-of-socks. Meanwhile, my 11-week-old was trying to “contribute” by putting his feet on the washing machine. It hit me: I wanted to be present for these little moments, not stuck in a never-ending cycle of cleaning and organizing.

The Realization

As I dug deeper into self-improvement books (yes, even SAHMs need those!), I stumbled upon this quote from Meditation for Mortals: “A perfectly kept house is the sign of a misspent life.” Ouch! It was like looking in the mirror and seeing my own reflection staring back at me. I realized that I’d been so focused on creating the perfect home, I’d forgotten to enjoy it with my tiny humans.

The Hack

So, I started implementing systems to simplify my life – and it’s been a game-changer! Here are some ideas I’ve used (and loved):

  • Keep socks on the porch by our shoes in a bin
  • Organize cabinets and closets with bins
  • Create a capsule wardrobe for myself and the kids
  • Permanent donation bin in the hall closet
  • Laundry bin just for towels
  • Cute towels for boys and a new towel rack they can reach
  • Organize medicine and use a label maker
  • Cleaning schedule and meal schedule using a binder with daily themes (Taco Tuesday, anyone?)
  • Siri playlists to keep our favorite tunes playing all day
  • Cleaning caddy with supplies in the basement that I refill as needed
  • Kids’ yes zone in the kitchen (snacks they can access and always say “yes” to)
  • Outdoor string lights on a timer

Funny Fail Moment

I tried using a label maker to label all my storage bins, but ended up with an entire box of labels that I couldn’t read because I wrote them too small! Who knew labeling could be such a disaster?

Reflection

Since implementing these systems, I’ve noticed a significant shift in our family’s dynamics. I’m more present for the kids, and they’re thriving (mostly). My husband even commented on how much more relaxed I seem – which is just the cherry on top! Simplifying my life with systems has been the best decision I ever made – and it’s not as boring as it sounds HA!
