When I Finally Learned to Say No

Personal Hook
I still remember the day I took on too many freelance projects, thinking I was a superhero. Next thing I knew, my ‘to-do’ list turned into a ‘to-cry-about’ list. It was like being in a never-ending loop of Netflix shows without the binge-watching fun.

The Realization

The realization hit me when I burned out (yes, that’s an actual medical term now) and couldn’t even muster the energy to scroll through social media without feeling anxious about all the things I wasn’t doing. It was then that I realized my superpower was actually my ability to procrastinate on a grand scale.

The Hack

So here’s the hack: when someone asks you for something, just pause for a second and think, “Is this really what I want to spend my time on?” If not, it’s perfectly okay (and healthy) to say no. Politely decline, and mean it. Your sanity will thank you.

Reflection

It’s crazy how saying ‘yes’ less often changed everything. My stress levels went down, productivity went up, and I even managed to read more than one book a year – a feat I thought was impossible with my overcommitting past.

Funny Fail Moment
And yes, there was this one project where I accepted an offer to be the “lead team member” for something. Turns out, it was actually just someone’s nephew’s school project, and all I had to do was help him with his math homework online. Let’s just say that was a lesson in communication and boundaries.
