Simplifying my life in action

Simplifying My Life with Systems (Not as Boring as it Sounds HA!)

Personal Hook

I’ll never forget the moment I caught myself vacuuming the living room for the third time that day, while my 2-year-old was playing with blocks and my 11-week-old was sleeping. I was so focused on getting everything “just right” that I was missing out on quality time with my kiddos. That’s when it hit me – I need to find a way to simplify my life without sacrificing our precious moments together.

The Realization

As I delved deeper into the world of productivity and minimalism, I stumbled upon a quote in Meditation for Mortals that resonated deeply with me: “A perfectly kept house is the sign of a misspent life.” It was like a lightbulb went off in my head – I realized that I’d been prioritizing cleaning and organizing over spending quality time with my family. It’s not that I’m lazy or don’t care about our home, but rather, I need to find a balance between being present and being practical.

The Hack

So, what’s the hack? I’ve started implementing various systems to simplify my life and free up more time for what really matters – making memories with my family! Here are some ideas that have worked for me so far:

  • Keep socks on the porch by our shoes in a bin
  • Organize cabinets and closets with bins
  • Create a capsule wardrobe for myself and the kids
  • Use a permanent donation bin in the hall closet
  • Laundry bin just for towels
  • Cute towels for the boys and a new towel rack they can reach
  • Organize medicine
  • Use a label maker to keep everything tidy
  • Schedule cleaning and meal prep using a binder or app
  • Create playlists with Siri so I can just say what I want to hear

Reflection

By implementing these systems, I’ve noticed a significant shift in my daily life. I’m no longer consumed by the need for perfection, and I’m able to be more present with my family. It’s not about having a “perfect” home; it’s about creating a life that’s rich in moments, love, and laughter.

Funny Fail Moment

I tried implementing a fancy scheduling system using a whiteboard, but ended up getting so overwhelmed by the complexity of it all that I just stuck to good ol’ sticky notes on the fridge. Whoops!
