Don't Be a Generator Zero: Turn Off First

Every Day Hacks: A Clever Bestie’s Secrets

Personal Hook

Hey there, friends! So, I was at my friend’s backyard, enjoying a camping trip and trying to set up our generator for some power. I turned that thing off without giving it a second thought… or so I thought. My friend reminded me (gently) that I forgot to turn the gas off first. Whoops!

The Realization

Fast forward to when we were getting ready for bed, and my friend mentioned that this was a no-brainer. They said turning the generator off without shutting off the gas could lead to some serious issues – like the carburetor float sticking or even leaking! I mean, who wants their camping trip ruined by a messy generator? Not me!

The Hack

So, here’s what you gotta do: when you turn your generator off, make sure to turn the gas off first. Yeah, it sounds simple, but trust me, it’s crucial! If you’re planning to shut down for the night, ideally let the engine run out of gas, then turn the switch off. And don’t forget to turn the fuel tank petcock off too!

To be extra safe:

  1. Turn the AC circuit breaker off (don’t wanna shock anything).
  2. Turn the fuel off (we’re talking gas, people!).
  3. Turn the generator switch off (this one’s a no-brainer, right?).
  4. Double-check that the generator switch is off, especially if it’s electric start (you don’t want to kill your battery).

Funny Fail Moment

Let’s just say I won’t be forgetting this again anytime soon…

Reflection

After learning this hack, my camping trips have been way more enjoyable (and safe!). It’s the little things in life, right?
