Tips for Saving Money on Food While on Vacation

Personal Hook

I’m currently counting down the days until my trip to the Florida Keys with my partner! We’ve been pinching pennies and planning our itinerary to make sure we can splurge on all the fun stuff – snorkeling, anyone? – without breaking the bank. But let’s be real, food costs can add up quickly when you’re eating out every day.

The Realization

As I was browsing through travel forums for tips, I stumbled upon a thread about people who’d been saving money on food while on vacation by being super resourceful. One person mentioned using a portable cooler to keep perishables fresh (aha!), another shared their secret stash of non-perishable goodies that lasted them the whole trip (aha again!). But then someone chimed in with an even better idea – how about making your own coffee and tea at the Airbnb, or even cooking up some meals in your mini-fridge?

The Hack

Here’s the hack: invest in a portable cooler! We picked one up for around $20, and it was a game-changer. We could stock up on fresh fruits, sandwiches, yogurt, and even little bags of popcorn (because priorities!) without taking up too much space in our mini-fridge. Plus, we’d often make breakfast together at the Airbnb using some leftover coffee and energy bars for snacking.

Funny Fail Moment

Fast food fail alert! I tried to sneak in a quick burger run one evening, but ended up spilling ketchup all over my white shirt…in front of our Airbnb neighbors…while trying to quickly devour the whole thing (no judgment here). Needless to say, that particular meal was not worth saving money on!

Reflection

The best part? We were able to save around $100 on food throughout our trip! It might not seem like a lot, but when you’re planning for all the fun stuff, every little bit counts. Now we can splurge even more on those snorkeling excursions or take an extra sunset cruise – because priorities!
