Surf's Up! Don't Wipe Out Your Gear

Personal Hook

I was out on my surfboard one sunny morning, feeling like a total boss as I caught wave after wave… until I realized I had no idea how to properly clean it afterwards. The thought of leaving all that saltwater and grime on my board (and potentially ruining it) was enough to make me freak out.

The Realization

I mean, who hasn’t been there? We get so caught up in the thrill of water sports that we forget about the importance of upkeep. I started researching online and quickly realized that most people have no idea how to properly clean their aquatic gear. Newsflash: it’s not just a matter of hosing it off and calling it a day! Water sports equipment needs TLC, folks.

The Hack

So here’s the thing: if you want your water sports equipment to last (and let me tell you, I’m all about getting that investment to pay off), you need to clean and dry it properly. For wetsuits, try this: go back and forth agitating them in fresh and soapy water until the water gets too cloudy to continue. Then, rinse with fresh soapy water until it stays colorless after agitation. Hang ’em up to dry out of the sun (yes, it’ll take longer, but trust me, you don’t want that UV damage). Boards? Rinse them off with fresh water, scrub away any excess gunk or seaweed, and make sure all sand and grime is gone before storage. And please, for the love of all things good, wax your hard top surfboard every year (or at least once the wax gets damaged).

Reflection

Since I started taking care of my gear like this, it’s been a total game-changer. My equipment looks brand new, and I’ve saved so much money from not having to replace it as often. It’s all about that daily habit, folks!

Funny Fail Moment
I once tried cleaning my kayak with a pressure washer… let’s just say I ended up with more water inside the kayak than out. Yeah, don’t do that.
