Frugal Food Hacks: Save Big on Groceries
Frugal Food Tips — Please Share
Personal Hook
I was at a friend’s place, and she mentioned that she had been buying expensive salad dressings for her daily greens. I thought to myself, “Girl, you’re doing it wrong!” It hit me – why not mix your own oil and acid? Game-changer!
The Realization
I was in the grocery store one day, contemplating how to make our weekly food budget work, when I stumbled upon a hidden gem – a thread on online forums about everyday hacks for stretching food dollars. That’s when it hit me: all these clever tricks and tips that people use to save money on groceries were just waiting to be shared!
The Hack
Here are some of my favorite frugal food hacks:
* Mix legumes. Combine dark and light legumes like kidney beans with black-eyed peas or black beans with chickpeas for different taste, color, and texture combinations.
* Use a soup container in the freezer. Drop small bits of meat, veggies, rice, pasta, or beans into it when you have them on hand. Then, when soup sounds good, empty a quart box of broth (or freshly made) into a pan or crockpot, add the contents of your soup container, and some fresh pepper, thyme, garlic, and salt to taste.
* Make homemade salad dressings. Combine an oil and an acid for a tasty combo. I love drizzling sunflower oil and mirin (lightly sweetened rice vinegar) directly on my greens, but olive or sesame oil and citrus juice is another favorite.
* Get a rotisserie chicken! It’s around $5 at Costco and can be used in so many ways – whole pieces, sandwiches, stir-fry, tacos, etc.
Reflection
Using these hacks has genuinely made my life easier. I’m saving money, eating more variety, and even reducing food waste!
Funny Fail Moment
I once tried to make a homemade salad dressing with honey instead of mirin, thinking it would give me that sweet and tangy taste. Let’s just say it was…an experience!
