Winemaking instead of buying: A Clever Frugal Venture
Personal Hook
I was at my friend’s cottage for a weekend, sipping on beer after beer. I thought to myself, “Why am I paying top dollar for someone else’s brew when I can make my own?” Little did I know, that’s exactly what I’d be doing soon.
The Realization
Let me start by saying I’ve been making wine for years. I know what I’m doing – it’s actually very simple: Yeast + Sugar + Water + Fruit into a dark place with an airlock. I was at the grocery store in Ontario, Canada, and our alcohol prices aren’t exactly cheap. That’s when it hit me: Why not take a few gallons of grape wine to the cottage instead of buying expensive beers? And then it got even better – what if I could make my own wine using clearance fruit from Walmart and other stores for 50-75% off?
The Hack
The plan is simple: buy decent-looking clearance fruit, start making Tropical or Very Berry fruit wines (yes, you read that right!), and voilà! You’ll have your own homemade wine without breaking the bank. Instead of spending $10 on a bottle of wine, I can spend $10 on making a few gallons. If it sounds gross, trust me – my orange wine experiment turned out to be a white wine with a hint of citrus at the end (surprisingly not awful!).
Reflection
Using this hack has changed my life in more ways than one. Not only have I saved money, but I’ve also discovered a new hobby that’s actually quite fun! Just remember, fermentation doesn’t really expire unless exposed to oxygen – so you can make it well in advance.
Funny Fail Moment
I made an orange wine once that tasted like a white wine with a little hint of citrus at the end. Who knew?!
