I still remember that moment when I opened my grocery bag, only to find a shocking price tag staring back at me. It was like someone had taken all my money and laughed maniacally! Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it felt like it anyway. That’s when the realization hit me: eating healthy doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank.
The Realization
Looking back over the past year, I’ve come to realize that I spent ALOT on my weekly groceries. At that time, I was in a phase of my life where I also made the conscious decision to eat healthier but I didn’t realize that it would cost so much! Is anyone else experiencing something similar? So, I began scouting for ways I could eat healthy while sticking to my budget lifestyle and came across some helpful tips along the way.
The Hack
Here are my top six hacks for eating healthy on a budget:
- Shop Weekly Sales Ads – Don’t forget those weekly sales ads! I’m always looking out for a good sale at my local grocery store. And when you find a coupon to use on something that’s already on sale that week, that is grocery-buying gold!
- Stop Buying Processed Foods – Do know what’s unhealthy and racks up your food budget? I’m talking about things like pizza pockets, frozen dinners, chicken nuggets, cookies, refined sugars, salty snacks and so much more! They are not doing your health any favors, and they’re such a tempting way to just overspend.
- Compare Grocery Stores – Don’t get carried away and blindly stick to a grocery store that is breaking your budget. Go on a mission to find the cheapest grocery store around. These are some of my go-to places:
- Aldi: They’re great for baking supplies, fresh produce, wine, cheese, and those canned goods
- WinCo Foods: If you’re in the Pacific Northwest, check out their rock-bottom prices for bulk and organic foods.
- Walmart: Best for organic, keto, and gluten-free items.
- Plan Your Meals – Meal planning! It’s been a game-changer for me. Here’s what I do: I start by taking stock of what’s already in my kitchen, and then I search for awesome recipes that match those ingredients. Plus, I keep an eye on sales at the grocery store and plan my meals around what’s discounted and what I already have in my pantry and freezer.
- Buy In Bulk – Before buying something in bulk, I always practice asking myself these four questions:
- Can I eat it before it goes bad?
- Is the price per ounce cheaper?
- Do I have space for it in larger quantities?
- Will I really use it? If you can answer yes to all of these questions, then go for it!
- Buy Generic Brands – Going generic will be one of the best ways for you to cut down on your grocery costs. Many times, the off-brand and brand-name items aren’t really so much different in terms of their quality and the ingredients.
Funny Fail Moment
I still chuckle when I think about my attempt at baking homemade bread. I’d read that it would save me a ton of money, but what I didn’t account for was my lack of patience! Let’s just say my first batch ended up as flat as a pancake (which is exactly what I should have made in the first place!).
Reflection
Since implementing these tips into my daily routine, not only has my grocery bill significantly decreased, but I’ve also been able to eat healthier and explore new recipes. My pantry is now stocked with all sorts of generic goodies, from oats to spices, and my meal planning skills have improved dramatically!
